National Solar Mission (NSM)
Nodal:Ministry of New and Renewable Energy
The National Solar Mission promotes the rapid deployment of utility-scale, rooftop, off-grid and decentralised solar energy across India. Cumulative installed solar capacity reached 168.04 GW as of 31 August 2026. The Central Electricity Authority’s planning study estimates approximately 292.57 GW of solar PV capacity in 2029–30, supporting India’s broader non-fossil electricity-capacity pathway.

About
Mission Overview
The National Solar Mission (NSM) aims to position India as a global leader in solar energy by creating enabling policy conditions for rapid deployment across the country. It promotes utility-scale and distributed solar power, rooftop solar, off-grid applications, agricultural solarisation and domestic solar manufacturing through policy, regulatory and programme interventions.
- Launched in January 2010
- Nodal ministry: Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).
- Target enhancement: In 2015, the cumulative grid-connected solar capacity target for 2022 was increased from 20 GW to 100 GW.
- Solar capacity: India achieved 168.04 GW of cumulative installed solar capacity as of 31 August 2026.
- Key interventions: PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, PM-KUSUM, Solar Parks and Ultra Mega Solar Power Projects, the CPSU Scheme, and the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for high-efficiency solar PV modules.
- 2030 pathway: The CEA’s Optimal Generation Capacity Mix estimates approximately 292.57 GW of solar PV capacity in 2029–30, within India’s broader 500 GW non-fossil electricity-capacity pathway for 2030.
- Climate action: Solar energy expansion increases the share of installed electricity capacity from non-fossil sources and supports India’s climate-change mitigation commitments.
Vision
To establish India as a global leader in solar energy by enabling rapid, inclusive and sustainable deployment of solar technologies across the country.
