About Andaman & Nicobar Islands SAPCC
SAPCC Overview
The Andaman & Nicobar Islands SAPCC 1.0 was prepared with the Department of Science and Technology, A&N Administration, as the nodal agency. Its preparation involved multi-departmental working groups, stakeholder consultations and technical guidance from UNDP. The plan adapts the national climate-mission framework to the islands’ distinctive geography through a dedicated Mission on Sustaining Island Ecosystems, alongside missions covering energy, habitat, water, forests, agriculture and strategic knowledge.
Climate profile
- The islands have a humid tropical coastal climate shaped by their proximity to the equator and the surrounding sea.
- Rainfall is influenced by both the southwest and northeast monsoons, with most precipitation occurring during the extended monsoon period.
- Temperatures remain relatively warm throughout the year.
Climate stress at a glance
- The Mission on Sustaining Island Ecosystems reflects the archipelago's specific coastal, marine and ecological context.
- Andaman & Nicobar Islands SAPCC 1.0 adopts an integrated approach to protecting mangroves, coral reefs, forests, coastlines and freshwater resources, recognising their close ecological links.
- Research, ecological monitoring, community awareness and stakeholder participation support locally informed island planning.
- Heavy rainfall, tropical cyclones, storm surges and changing sea conditions are major climate stresses for the islands.
